the President of the Russian Academy of education Lyudmila Verbitskaya has proposed to exclude from the curriculum “War and peace” by Leo Tolstoy and some of the works of Dostoevsky. It came from the fact that they are difficult to understand child. At the same time, she urged to pay more attention to the Orthodox and in particular the study of the Bible.

We asked the rector of the Literary Institute, writer Alexey Varlamov to understand how legitimate the question itself.

- First of all, I need to see the source to be accurate in the wording. But in any case, on the one hand , “War and peace” and especially Dostoevsky, and on the other the Bible are not competitors. To oppose one to the other would not. I the supporter of to write in the school curriculum and “War and peace” and the novel “Crime and punishment” Dostoevsky as works eminently Christian in its content.

Lyudmila Verbitskaya, which submitted the proposal, based on the fact that “War and peace” and Dostoevsky is difficult to read of a child who does not understand a lot of things at school age.

- I will Allow myself to disagree. I think children understand how much they can understand. Yes, and they are all different. In addition, the fact that they do not understand, somehow delayed in their minds and in the future, is bearing fruit. Potato sprouts then grow. I think that Russian classics itself is beautiful. Is that in Soviet times we were saved and allowed not to lose their national face. Despite a hostile atheistic ideology we were brought up by the Russian people to learn Christian values through our classics. To unsubscribe from this today, in my opinion, it would be strange.
